Who is OPSEC for?

It’s a common misconception that OPSEC “belongs” to the military. In reality, the OPSEC, the process of denying an adversary critical information, saves lives in the battlefield, dollars and jobs in the corporate world, and safety and security on the personal level.

At the same time that I was creating an OPSEC plan at work, my wife was practicing OPSEC at home by leaving a light and the TV on.

OPSEC is for everybody, everywhere.

So true. We practice OPSEC at home without thinking about it. It’s only when we knowingly think about applying it that we use it in a deliberate manner. Like teaching our children or friends about it. OPSEC is for everyone.

In reality, doesn’t EVERYONE practice OPSEC…knowingly or unknowingly? Maybe it becomes a question of “do you practice good OPSEC, or poor OPSEC?” For the folks associated with the government, OPSEC “should” be a by-product of professionalism.

Well like anything else, OPSEC, should begin at home. It a parents job to teach a child to look both ways before crossing a street, and in turn the child learns how to protect his/her life from harm. We teach our children to not talk to strangers, and in turn they hopefully will remain safe. Even when we give our child money to spend at the store we teach them not to wave the money around and find a safe spot to store it until it is used. So I agree, OPSEC is for everyone and every situation.
